Fixed today, covered after.
General liability with completed work, customers' appliances in your care, tools and parts, commercial auto and workers' comp for appliance repair techs and shops.

Leaks, gas lines and heavy lifting
The claims I see for appliance techs rarely come from the appliance itself. They come from what happens after you leave: a dishwasher line that drips under a hardwood floor, an ice maker connection that lets go, a range reconnected to gas. Moving a fridge can also gouge floors and cabinets on the way out.
I build coverage around that: general liability that includes completed work, coverage for customers' machines while they sit in your shop or van, tools and parts on the truck, a commercial auto policy for the service vehicle, and workers' comp for the lifting your techs do every day.
- General liabilityWater and fire damage at customers' homes, including after the job.
- Customers' propertyAppliances in your shop or van for repair.
- Tools and partsDiagnostic gear and stock on the truck.
- Commercial autoService vans and pickup trucks.
What underwriters will ask
Having these ready means I can go to market on the first call. The quote form asks for the same things, and anything you don’t know yet can wait.
- Work: in-home, shop or both, and which appliances.
- Gas work: whether you connect gas appliances.
- Registration: your BHGS registration if you have one.
- Vehicles: vans, years and who drives.
- Revenue and payroll: annual figures.
- History: current policies and claims.
Appliance repair insurance, answered
A dishwasher I fixed leaked a week later. Is that covered?
Damage that shows up after you finish is a completed-work claim. General liability that includes completed operations often responds to the floor and cabinet damage, subject to the policy. Fixing your own part or labor is usually not covered.
Do I need to register with the state?
California's Bureau of Household Goods and Services registers electronic and appliance repair dealers. Check whether your work requires it; I'll note the registration on your application.
Are customers' machines in my shop covered?
Usually not by general liability, which generally excludes property in your care. Bailee or customers' property coverage can cover fire or theft while it's with you.
Will my personal auto policy cover my service van?
Often not when the van is used mainly for business. A commercial auto policy is the clean answer, and it's what most commercial clients ask to see.
Do you offer appliance repair insurance outside California?
Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. Sam Alishahi is licensed in 48 states and Washington, DC and places policies there directly. In Florida and Washington, where Sam's licenses are still being issued, a partner agency in your state helps in the meantime. The shopping across carriers works the same way. Rules, minimums and markets differ by state — see insurance requirements by state.
