Short answer: After the first premium, Alabama gives you thirty days—or a full month of at least thirty days if the insurer chooses that option—to pay before a life policy lapses, and coverage stays active in that window. Any free-look sits on the policy face page rather than in §27-15-3.
This guide is general consumer information for Alabama life insurance buyers. It isn't legal advice or a coverage determination. Policy wording, underwriting and the statutes linked below control.
Thirty-day grace period
Ala. Code §27-15-3 requires a provision that a grace period of 30 days, or at the insurer's option one month of not less than 30 days, shall be allowed for any premium after the first. The policy continues in full force during grace. If a claim arises during grace, any premium due or overdue may be deducted from the proceeds.
Examination window
Ala. Code §27-15-3 itself is the grace rule. Title 27 Chapter 15's other standard provisions we confirmed cover incontestability and related clauses, not a statewide ordinary-life free-look number. Keep the delivery date and read the face page for any return period the insurer printed.
Alabama face-page checklist
Because Alabama’s free-look number is not set in the grace statute we cited, photograph or save the policy face page on delivery day and calendar any examination window the insurer printed.
