Seventy-seven homes bought out
Augusta's Floodplain Management office runs a voluntary Flood Buyout Program that has acquired 77 flood-prone properties since 2000. The houses are torn down and the land returned to open space that holds floodwater. The program gives priority to occupied homes that flood often. Ask the Floodplain Manager whether a street you are considering has buyout properties nearby.
Near the levee, and what the office can give you
Augusta publishes levee outreach and a map of the area protected by its levee. A levee lowers flood risk but doesn't eliminate it. Planning & Development keeps the city's flood records and can give you a flood map determination, copies of elevation certificates and FIRMs, substantial-damage determinations and help with a Letter of Map Amendment. Call the Floodplain Manager at (706) 821-1796 before you buy or build.
