When MSD pays for a sewer backup

The Metropolitan Sewer District's Sewer Backup Program can reimburse damage from backups caused by too little capacity in the public sewer or by poor maintenance or operation. It doesn't cover overland or street flooding, or backups from your own building sewer. You must report a backup within 48 hours of finding it, and claims are due within two years. Ohio law requires MSD to subtract whatever your own insurance pays, so the claim form asks about your homeowners or renters policy. A sewer backup endorsement still matters.

The Mill Creek Barrier Dam

The Stormwater Management Utility runs the Cincinnati Local Flood Protection Project, built in 1948. It includes the Mill Creek Barrier Dam, a 1.5-mile floodwall along Mehring Way and 14 floodgates. When the Ohio River nears its 52-foot flood stage, crews close the dam with steel bulkheads and pump Mill Creek over it. The system was built for the 1937 flood level of 80 feet. Homes in the Mill Creek Valley depend on it, and a flood policy covers what happens if it's overwhelmed.
