Federal disaster declarations in El Paso County

FEMA's disaster declarations data shows 11 major disaster declarations that included El Paso County since 1965, led by flood events (6), fire events (3) and severe storm events (1). The most recent: Severe Storms, Flooding, and Tornadoes, 2023, Severe Storms, Tornadoes, Flooding, Landslides, and Mudslides, 2015, Severe Storms, Flooding, Landslides, and Mudslides, 2013 and Black Forest Wildfire, 2013. FEMA also lists 5 emergency declarations for the county in the same data.

Colorado Springs flood discounts

Colorado Springs takes part in FEMA's Community Rating System. The Stormwater Enterprise says that gives a 25% flood insurance discount to people in high-risk flood areas and 10% to everyone else. A higher deductible, grandfathering an older rate after maps change, and mitigation work on the home can all lower the cost further.

The Templeton Gap Levee

The Templeton Gap Levee Floodway is a 2-mile channel that carries runoff from east of Union Boulevard in the Pikeview neighborhood to Monument Creek. FEMA is producing new flood maps for El Paso County, and the levee, built before FEMA's 2013 standards, has to be upgraded. If it isn't certified, the area behind it would be mapped as Zone D, meaning the flood risk is unknown. If it is certified, the area becomes shaded Zone X. Construction is expected to finish in winter 2027. If you own a home behind the levee, check your zone once the new maps take effect.
