Lessons from Harvey
The National Weather Service in Corpus Christi says Harvey, on August 25, 2017, was the first major hurricane to hit the Middle Texas Coast since Celia in 1970. The eye came ashore about 30 miles northeast of the city, near Rockport and Fulton. Corpus Christi still had trees, fences and power poles down, the airport logged a 63 mph gust before going offline, and storm tides reached 3 to 6 feet at Bob Hall Pier. Check your windstorm deductible and certificate before the season starts.
More for Corpus Christi policyholders
Nueces is one of the 14 first-tier counties where TWIA is the wind-and-hail insurer of last resort.
Windstorm certificates (WPI-8 and WPI-8-E)
Per TWIA's windstorm certification page and TDI's windstorm program, new construction, additions and re-roofs in the catastrophe area must be built and inspected to TDI's windstorm code to qualify. TDI issues a WPI-8 for work inspected during construction and a WPI-8-E for completed work; look up a property's certificates on TDI's windstorm site before you buy. TWIA notes that some uncertified 1988–2009 homes may still qualify with a surcharge.
Auto: 30/60/25
TDI lists the 30/60/25 minimum; TxDMV checks insurance at registration.
