Short answer: Dallas County's FEMA National Risk Index report is the place to see how the Index ranks local natural hazards for your tract. Dallas Code §18-13 caps weeds and grass at 12 inches on the premises. The Texas FAIR Plan remains the statewide residual option after two voluntary-market declinations, and every driver needs at least 30/60/25 liability to satisfy Texas law and registration.
This guide is general information for homeowners and drivers in the Dallas area (Dallas County). It isn't legal advice or a coverage determination. Your policy wording, underwriting, city and county ordinances, and state insurance and motor-vehicle rules control. Check your address on FEMA's National Risk Index (county report for Dallas County) and the Flood Map Service Center.

The October 2019 tornado
The National Weather Service in Fort Worth traced the October 20, 2019 tornado from near I-35E and Walnut Hill Lane east between Walnut Hill and Royal Lane, through Preston Hollow to near US 75 and Forest Lane, and then into Richardson. The strongest damage was rated EF3, with winds near 140 mph, and the survey's photos show homes on Royal Lane, Hillcrest Road and Northaven with roof damage. Tornado wind damage is usually covered, so check your wind and hail deductible and your roof settlement terms, especially whether an older roof is paid at actual cash value.
Weed and vegetation rules that affect property condition
Dallas City Code §18-13 prohibits weeds or grass higher than 12 inches on the premises (including certain parkway areas, with a perimeter defense described in the section). §18-14.1 sets clearance heights for vegetation over alleys, streets and sidewalks. Insurers reviewing aerial or inspection photos look for overgrown lots; clearing before you bind can avoid condition issues.
Texas FAIR Plan if the voluntary market says no
Same statewide rules as elsewhere in Texas: the TDI FAIR Plan overview and TFPA require at least two declinations from licensed residential writers and no valid comparable licensed offer. Coverage is limited and sold only through agents. Dallas is outside the TWIA seacoast catastrophe area, so FAIR Plan is the usual residual path—not TWIA.
Auto liability and getting plates
Per TDI's auto guide, carry at least 30/60/25. Register or renew through your county tax assessor-collector with proof of insurance (TxDMV). Hard-to-place drivers can ask about TAIPA after two refusals.
