Indiana Minimum Car Insurance Requirements

By Alishahi Insurance, independent broker · CA License #4348151 · Updated October 2026

Short answer: Indiana requires 25/50/25 liability: $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for injuries, and $25,000 for property damage. Insurers must provide uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage unless the named insured rejects it in writing, and underinsured coverage must be at least $50,000. Indiana bars recovery if you're more than 50% at fault.

The minimum

The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles and the Indiana Department of Insurance list the required financial responsibility:

CoverageMinimum
Bodily injury liability$25,000 per person / $50,000 per accident
Property damage liability$25,000 per accident

UM and UIM: included unless rejected

Under Indiana Code §27-7-5-2, insurers must make uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage part of the policy unless the named insured rejects it in writing. A few points stand out:

  • UIM must be at least $50,000 per person, higher than the $25,000 bodily injury liability minimum.
  • UM property damage can be included to cover damage to your car caused by an uninsured driver, subject to a deductible.
  • A rejection carries forward at renewal unless you request the coverage later.

If you're considering a rejection to save money, compare the price first. UM and UIM protect you, your household and your passengers.

Fault in Indiana

Indiana is an at-fault state that uses modified comparative fault. Under Indiana's Comparative Fault Act, you can't recover if your fault is greater than the fault of everyone else involved, meaning more than 50%. Below that, your damages are reduced by your share.

Proof of insurance

Indiana requires drivers to carry proof of financial responsibility. The BMV may require proof after certain violations or crashes, and you may receive a request to verify coverage. If you can't show proof, your license can be suspended. Reinstatement can require fees and, in some cases, an SR-22 filing for several years.

What the minimum doesn't do

  • It doesn't pay for your car. Collision and comprehensive are optional under state law, but lenders require them.
  • It doesn't cover your injuries unless the other driver is at fault and insured, or you have UM/UIM or medical payments coverage.
  • It may not cover a serious crash. Medical bills and lost wages can exceed $25,000 per person quickly.

Indiana driving risks

  • Deer collisions. Indiana's rural roads see frequent deer strikes, usually covered by comprehensive.
  • Winter storms. Snow and ice on I-65, I-69 and I-70 can cause multi-vehicle crashes.
  • Commuting into neighboring states. Drivers who commute into Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky or Michigan should make sure their limits meet or exceed those states' requirements.

How much to consider

Drivers with homes or savings often choose 100/300/100 or higher, with UM and UIM at matching limits. An umbrella policy can add protection. See how much umbrella insurance do I need.

Common scenarios

An underinsured driver with 25/50 coverage causes a crash that injures you. Your UIM, at least $50,000 unless you rejected it, may pay the difference between your damages and their limits, up to your coverage.

You hit a deer near Bloomington. Comprehensive pays, minus your deductible.

You're found 55% at fault. You can't recover from the other driver under Indiana's rule.

The BMV asks you to verify coverage after a crash. Respond by the deadline to avoid suspension.

Key terms

  • UIM: pays when the at-fault driver's limits are too low. Minimum $50,000 in Indiana.
  • UM property damage: covers your car when an uninsured driver damages it.
  • Comparative Fault Act: Indiana's rule barring recovery above 50% fault.
  • SR-22: a certificate of insurance filed with the state after certain violations.

Questions to ask your broker

  • Did I reject UM or UIM?
  • Do I have UM property damage coverage?
  • What would 100/300/100 cost?
  • What comprehensive deductible makes sense for deer collisions?

Bottom line

Indiana's 25/50/25 minimum is a floor. Keep UM and UIM, consider higher limits and add comprehensive for deer and weather. Compare states in our car insurance minimums by state table.
