Maryland life insurance consumer guide

By Alishahi Insurance, independent broker · CA License #4348151 · Updated October 2026

Short answer: If a renewal premium is late, Maryland Insurance Article §16-202 keeps the life policy in force for thirty days—or a month of at least thirty days if the insurer picks that option—and lets overdue premium come out of a claim paid in that window. Industrial life paid more often than monthly gets four weeks. Ordinary-life free-look is not a Title 16 standard number we confirmed; look at the face page you were handed.

This guide is general consumer information for Maryland life insurance buyers. It isn't legal advice or a coverage determination. Policy wording, underwriting and the statutes linked below control.

Thirty-day grace period

Maryland Insurance Article §16-202 requires each life policy to allow a grace period for any premium after the first. The grace period is:

  • 30 days, or
  • at the insurer's option, 1 month of not less than 30 days, or
  • 4 weeks for industrial life with premiums payable more often than monthly

The policy continues in full force during grace. If a claim arises during grace, any premium due or overdue may be deducted from the proceeds.

Where the free-look lives

Insurance Article §16-202 is the grace statute. Title 16's standard provisions we confirmed do not create a general ordinary-life free-look. Replacement sales can carry separate COMAR timing rules; for a brand-new non-replacement policy, rely on whatever examination notice is printed on the face page you actually received.

Insurer financial strength

Questions about whether a life insurer is financially sound should go to the Maryland Insurance Administration, not to marketing materials.
