The Medi-Cal asset limit is back: what it means for insurance planning

By Alishahi Insurance, independent broker · CA License #4348151 · Updated October 2026 · En español

Short answer: Starting January 1, 2026, Medi-Cal again counts assets for people age 65 or older, people with disabilities, nursing home residents and some other non-MAGI members. According to DHCS, the limit is $130,000 for one person plus $65,000 for each additional household member (up to 10). Changes have been reported for 2027, so confirm the current limit with DHCS. Your home, one vehicle, household goods and certain retirement accounts are exempt.

Married couples with spousal impoverishment protections get additional allowances, according to DHCS.

Who it applies to

DHCS says the asset test applies to members who are 65 or older, have a disability, live in a nursing home, or are in a family whose income is too high to qualify under federal tax rules. It covers non-MAGI programs, including long-term care and the Medicare Savings Programs. Most working-age adults and children on income-based (MAGI) Medi-Cal are not affected.

Transfers and the look-back

According to DHCS, transfers made before January 1, 2026 aren't counted. Giving away assets for less than they're worth on or after that date may cause a penalty that delays long-term care coverage.

Insurance planning questions to ask

  • Long-term care: If you're weighing private coverage, see our California Partnership for Long-Term Care guide and long-term care insurance page. Ask an elder law attorney how a policy's benefits interact with Medi-Cal for your situation.
  • Medicare supplements: If you rely on a Medicare Savings Program, the asset test now applies at renewal. Review your Medigap options.
  • Life insurance cash value: Ask the county or an attorney how any cash value is treated before you change a policy. We don't decide eligibility.

Checklist

  1. Watch for your renewal packet. DHCS says current members report assets at their next renewal after January 1, 2026.
  2. List countable assets and their values.
  3. Talk to an elder law attorney before moving or gifting assets.
  4. Review long-term care and Medicare coverage with a licensed broker.
