Federal disaster declarations in Mobile County
FEMA's disaster declarations data shows 26 major disaster declarations that included Mobile County since 1969, led by hurricane events (16), severe storm events (8) and flood events (1). The most recent: Severe Storms, Straight-Line Winds, and Tornadoes, 2023, Hurricane Zeta, 2020, Hurricane Sally, 2020 and Hurricane Michael, 2018. FEMA also lists 13 emergency declarations for the county in the same data.
Rain, rivers and the bay
The City of Mobile says it gets one of the highest rainfall totals in the U.S. Gulf storms add to everyday flooding with acute flood events. The city lists the waters that can flood it: Dog River, Three Mile Creek, Eight Mile Creek, Halls Mill Creek, Chickasaw Creek, Bayou Sara, the Mobile River and Mobile Bay, among others. Some parts of the city are far more flood-prone than others, so find your own flood zone on the FEMA map for Mobile, community number 015007.
No extra freeboard, so check the certificate
Mobile requires elevation certificates at several stages of construction, and the final one must be approved before anyone can live in the building. The city also notes it doesn't currently require freeboard, the extra height above the base flood elevation that many coastal communities demand. A home built to the minimum may sit lower than one built to a stricter standard. Ask for the elevation certificate, which also affects your flood premium. NFIP claims don't need a disaster declaration.
