Nebraska flood risk and NFIP guide

By Alishahi Insurance, independent broker · CA License #4348151 · Updated October 2026

Short answer: Nebraska's Floodplain Management Division (Department of Water, Energy and Environment) produces Flood Awareness Areas and Digital Work Maps that communities can use as best available data where FEMA maps are missing or outdated. You can view them, along with FEMA flood data, on the Nebraska Floodplain Interactive Map, and the state also runs a real-time flood forecasting map and ice jam reporting.

This guide is general information for Nebraska property owners and renters about flood risk and the National Flood Insurance Program. It isn't a coverage determination. FEMA maps, your community's floodplain ordinance and your policy wording control.

Best-available state maps

The Nebraska Floodplain Mapping page explains two state products:

  • Flood Awareness Areas: floodplain boundaries produced by the state division for communities in a current mapping project, without regulatory floodplain boundaries, or with outdated information.
  • Digital Work Maps: maps built to FEMA standards for communities without DFIRMs or with outdated ones, which communities may adopt for local planning and building.

If your lot shows up in a flood awareness area but not on an older FEMA map, the risk is real even if a lender doesn't require coverage.

Interactive and real-time maps

The Nebraska Floodplain Interactive Map shows FEMA's digital flood hazard data, community floodplain information and flood awareness areas. A separate real-time flood forecasting map shows current and forecasted stage heights and inundation boundaries, and the division takes ice jam reports, a common spring risk on Nebraska rivers.

Quote NFIP through FloodSmart before thaw; most new policies wait 30 days.
