Short answer: According to the Ohio Department of Insurance, a homeowners insurer that won't renew your policy must notify you 30 days before it expires and explain how to apply to the Ohio FAIR Plan. A bill introduced in 2026, HB 652, would raise this to 60 days, but it is not law yet. For claim complaints, call ODI Consumer Services at 800-686-1526.
Non-renewal
The ODI Homeowners Insurance Guide says insurers must give 30 days' notice of a non-renewal and explain the Ohio FAIR Plan procedures. Mid-term cancellations also need 30 days' notice, except for nonpayment, arson, misrepresentation or fraud. The guide also warns that two or three claims in five years can lead to losing coverage.
Pending change
HB 652 would require 60 days' notice and a stated reason, or a reason given on request. It is a proposed bill, not current law.
