Short answer: Pennsylvania gives new individual fixed-dollar life policies at least a 10-day free look, rising to 20 days when you replace another insurer's policy and 45 days when you replace one from the same insurer group.
This guide is general consumer information for Pennsylvania life insurance buyers. It isn't legal advice or a coverage determination. Policy wording, underwriting and the statutes linked below control.
Free-look, including replacements
Section 410D of Pennsylvania's Insurance Company Law of 1921 requires individual fixed-dollar life and endowment policies to carry a prominent notice of your right to return the policy for a premium refund:
- At least 10 days after delivery for a new policy
- At least 45 days when it replaces a policy or annuity with the same insurer or insurer group
- At least 20 days when it replaces coverage from a different insurer
If you're replacing coverage, don't cancel the old policy until the new one is in force and you've used the review window.
Grace period
Confirm the grace-period days printed in your policy. For scheduled-premium variable life, Pennsylvania's regulation at 31 Pa. Code §82.24 lists the mandatory provisions, including the grace period.
Insurer financial strength
To ask about an insurer's financial strength or solvency under Pennsylvania regulation, contact the Pennsylvania Insurance Department.
