Tennessee life insurance consumer guide

By Alishahi Insurance, independent broker · CA License #4348151 · Updated October 2026

Short answer: Tennessee life policies must give a one-month grace period for every premium after the first year, during which the insurance continues in force; interest may apply, and an overdue premium may be deducted if death occurs during grace. Check your policy face page for any free-look window your insurer prints—T.C.A. §56-7-2307's required provisions we confirmed do not set a general free-look for ordinary life.

This guide is general consumer information for Tennessee life insurance buyers. It isn't legal advice or a coverage determination. Policy wording, underwriting and the statutes linked below control.

One-month grace after the first year

T.C.A. §56-7-2307(2) requires a provision for a grace of one (1) month for the payment of every premium after the first year, which may be subject to an interest charge, during which month the insurance continues in force. The provision may stipulate that if the insured dies during the month of grace, the overdue premium will be deducted in any settlement.

Settlement timing

The same section (§56-7-2307(11)) requires that when a policy becomes a claim by death, settlement shall be made upon receipt of due proof of death, or not later than two months after receipt of the proof.

Free-look on the policy face

The mandatory provisions in §56-7-2307 we confirmed cover premiums, grace, incontestability, loans and related clauses—not a statewide ordinary-life free-look. Read the face page of your delivered policy for any examination or return window the insurer prints.

Insurer financial strength

Questions about whether a life insurer is financially sound should go to the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance, not to marketing materials.
