Short answer: Utah lets you return a new life policy for any reason within 10 days after delivery, or 30 days for a replacement policy, and get a refund of premium paid. The return must be in writing and delivered or mailed first class to the insurer or its agent.
This guide is general consumer information for Utah life insurance buyers. It isn't legal advice or a coverage determination. Policy wording, underwriting and the statutes linked below control.
Examination (free-look) period
Utah Code 31A-22-423 lets a policyholder return a life policy, annuity contract or certificate for any reason on or before:
- 10 days after delivery, or
- 30 days after delivery for a replacement policy
A "return" is a writing (on the policy or accompanying it) saying the policy is being returned to terminate coverage, delivered or mailed first class to the insurer or its agent. The returned policy is void from issuance, and you're entitled to a refund of premium paid.
