Short answer: Wyoming's liability floor is 25/50/20: $25,000 for one person's injuries, $50,000 for all injuries in a crash, and $20,000 for property. Driving uninsured is a misdemeanor: a $500 to $1,500 fine, up to six months in jail, or both. A conviction also means three years of proof-of-insurance filings. Uninsured motorist coverage is included unless the named insured rejects it.
The limits
Wyoming Statutes Title 31 sets the same numbers in two places, §31-9-405(b) for liability policies and §31-9-102(a)(xi) for bonds:
| Coverage | Minimum |
|---|---|
| Injury or death of one person | $25,000 |
| Injuries or deaths in one accident | $50,000 |
| Damage to others' property | $20,000 |
Misdemeanor penalties
Under W.S. §31-4-103(a), an owner who drives or lets someone drive a vehicle that must be registered, without a liability policy or bond in force, commits a misdemeanor:
- Fine: at least $500 and up to $1,500.
- Jail: as long as six months.
- Or both.
For a second or later violation, the judge must require you to deliver the vehicle's registration and license plates to the county treasurer, who holds them until the judge finds you've met all legal obligations. A judge who suspends part of a sentence must also make plate surrender a condition of probation.
Excusable neglect or a mistake by someone else is a defense, and even after a conviction the court can weigh that evidence in setting the penalty.
Seven days to produce proof
Under §31-4-103(b), an officer who stops you for a moving violation, or inspects your vehicle, must ask for evidence of insurance. If you can't show it on the spot, you have seven days to produce it. A validly issued insurance ID card counts as compliance.
There's no conviction if you bring to court a liability policy, or evidence of a bond on file with the department, that was valid when the citation was issued. The judge may also order a driver who can't produce proof to pay restitution.
Three years of filings after a conviction
Once the department receives notice of a conviction, §31-4-103(c) requires you to file and maintain proof of financial responsibility for three years, commonly an SR-22. If you don't provide it within 30 days of notice, your driver's license is suspended until you do.
Online verification
Wyoming's online insurance verification system is required by §31-4-103(e). It lets the department, courts, law enforcement and insurers check a vehicle's status around the clock by VIN, policy number or owner name. The WYDOT insurance verification page adds:
- Electronic verification is accepted as proof of insurance.
- The program covers vehicles on personal lines policies.
- Vehicles on commercial policies are currently exempt from the program.
Who's exempt
Section 31-4-103 doesn't apply to approved self-insurers, self-insured government vehicles, and certain multi-state commercial vehicles with compliant coverage. Nonresidents whose home states require insurance are fine if their policy meets those states' rules, and vehicles from states that don't require insurance are exempt.
Uninsured motorist coverage
Section 31-10-101 builds UM into every Wyoming auto liability policy at 25/50 bodily injury limits. The named insured may turn it down, and after that the same insurer needn't restore it on renewal absent a written request.
One extra protection: §31-10-102 treats a vehicle as uninsured when the at-fault driver's insurer can't pay because it's insolvent.
Fault: the 50% line
Wyoming's comparative fault statute, W.S. §1-1-109, lets you recover if your fault is not more than 50% of the total fault of everyone involved. Your damages shrink by your percentage. In a jury trial, the court must tell jurors what their fault percentages will mean for the result.
Is the minimum enough?
A $20,000 property damage limit can run out quickly with a late-model truck, and $25,000 per person doesn't go far after a serious injury. Consider:
- Liability limits well above the minimum.
- Keeping uninsured motorist coverage and adding underinsured coverage if offered.
- Collision and comprehensive for any vehicle you'd replace.
Bottom line
Wyoming's minimum is 25/50/20, but the penalty starts at $500, repeat offenders give up their plates, and a conviction brings three years of filings. See how Wyoming stacks up in our car insurance minimums by state table.
