Short answer: Auto insurers must give advance written notice before canceling or not renewing your policy. In the states below, cancellation notice runs from 15 days (South Carolina) to 30 days (Minnesota, Ohio and Michigan), with 10 days for nonpayment in several states. Non-renewal notice is 30 days in California and Ohio and 60 days in Minnesota. South Carolina lets you ask the insurance director to review the action.
Use the notice period to shop for new coverage so you don't have a lapse.

If you get a cancellation or non-renewal notice

- Start shopping right away so the new policy begins before the old one ends.
- Ask about review rights. South Carolina and Minnesota tell you how to complain to the regulator.
