Homeowners insurance non-renewal notice rules by state

By Alishahi Insurance, independent broker · CA License #4348151 · Updated October 2026 · En español

Short answer: Minimum notice periods for non-renewing a homeowners policy range from 20 days in Indiana to 120 days in Florida. Many states require 30 days, and others require 45, 60 or 75 days (Kentucky and California). New York and New Jersey use notice windows. For a few states, including Kansas, we couldn't confirm a statutory period, and the table says so. The table covers all 50 states and D.C., with a link to the source for each.

How to use it

  • Notice periods are minimums for non-renewal. Mid-term cancellation rules are different.
  • Count from the date the notice is mailed or delivered, depending on the state.
  • Policies from state FAIR Plans or pools may follow different rules.

Methodology

Every row comes from one of our state articles, checked against the statute or the state regulator's guidance in October 2026. Where we couldn't confirm a statutory notice period for individual homeowners policies, the row says so instead of guessing. "—" in the reason column means we didn't confirm a statutory requirement to state a reason. This is general information, not legal advice. Check your own notice and policy.
