Short answer: Under HRS §431:10-226.5, a Hawaii homeowners insurer that won't renew your policy must give you written notice at least 30 days before it expires. If you think a notice broke the rules, contact the Hawaii Insurance Division.
The rule
- 30 days' written notice before non-renewal
- Residential property cancellations need 20 days' notice, or 10 for nonpayment or misrepresentation
- A non-renewal isn't valid without evidence of mailing

What to do if you get a notice
- Check the dates. Count from when the notice was mailed or delivered.
- Ask your insurer or agent for the specific reason and whether a repair or update would change its decision.
- Start shopping right away. If regular insurers turn you down, ask about Hawaii's FAIR Plan or other residual market, if one exists.
- If the notice seems late or vague, file a complaint with the Hawaii Insurance Division.
