Short answer: Under La. R.S. 22:1335, a Louisiana homeowners insurer that won't renew your policy must give you written notice at least 60 days before it expires, and the notice must state the reason (this changed from 30 days on July 1, 2026, under Acts 2025, No. 182). If you think a notice broke the rules, contact the Louisiana Department of Insurance.
The rule
- Notice at least 60 days before expiration (30 days before July 1, 2026), stating the reason
- If the notice is late, coverage continues until 60 days after it's sent
- A surviving spouse can request up to a 60-day grace period to pay the premium
Source: La. R.S. 22:1335.
What to do if you get a notice
- Check the dates. Count from when the notice was mailed or delivered.
- Ask your insurer or agent for the specific reason and whether a repair or update would change its decision.
- Start shopping right away. If regular insurers turn you down, ask about Louisiana's FAIR Plan or other residual market, if one exists.
- If the notice seems late or vague, file a complaint with the Louisiana Department of Insurance.
