New Hampshire homeowners insurance guide

By Alishahi Insurance, independent broker · CA License #4348151 · Updated October 2026

Short answer: For New Hampshire homeowners, winter is the main claims season: frozen pipes, ice and snow load. Keep the heat on when you're away, because policies commonly limit freezing damage in unheated homes. Insurers must make any non-renewal effective at least 45 days after the notice is mailed or delivered, and they can deliver it electronically. Once you file, insurers must acknowledge within 10 working days, decide within 30 days and pay within 5 working days after agreeing on the amount.

This guide is general information for New Hampshire homeowners. It isn't legal advice. Your policy wording controls.

Step 1: Prevent winter claims

Most homeowners policies cover sudden burst pipes but may exclude freezing damage if you didn't maintain heat or drain the system while away. Ask your agent about vacancy limits and water backup endorsements. Flood isn't covered; see FloodSmart.

Step 2: Non-renewal notice

Under RSA 417-B:4, the effective date of a non-renewal must be at least 45 days after the notice is mailed or delivered, and electronic delivery is allowed, so watch your email. Details: New Hampshire homeowners non-renewal rules. If coverage is hard to find, see FAIR Plan vs. surplus lines home insurance.

Step 3: Claim deadlines

Under N.H. Admin. Code Ins 1002, insurers must acknowledge a claim within 10 working days, accept or deny within 30 days after notice of the claim and pay within 5 working days after agreement on the amount or receipt of requested documents. More: New Hampshire insurance claim deadlines.

Step 4: Disputes

If you disagree on the amount, check your policy's appraisal clause; see home insurance appraisal clause rules by state. You can also complain to the New Hampshire Insurance Department.
