North Dakota homeowners insurance guide

By Alishahi Insurance, independent broker · CA License #4348151 · Updated October 2026

Short answer: In North Dakota, the most important homeowners insurance decision may be timing your flood policy: homeowners insurance doesn't cover flood, and the North Dakota Insurance Department warns that NFIP coverage generally starts 30 days after you buy it, so it must be in place before spring flooding. Insurers must give 45 days' written notice before non-renewing. North Dakota law doesn't set fixed day counts for property claims.

This guide is general information for North Dakota homeowners. It isn't legal advice. Your policy wording controls.

Step 1: Buy flood insurance before the thaw

The North Dakota Insurance Department explains that standard homeowners policies don't cover flood, that you can buy NFIP flood insurance if your community participates, even outside high-risk areas, and that coverage generally takes effect 30 days after you purchase the policy. Get quotes through your agent or FloodSmart well before spring.

Step 2: Storms and winter weather

Hail, wind and freezing pipes drive many North Dakota claims. Keep your home heated when away, document damage right away and make temporary repairs. If coverage is hard to find, see FAIR Plan vs. surplus lines home insurance.

Step 3: Non-renewal notice

Under N.D.C.C. ch. 26.1-39, insurers must give 45 days' written notice before the policy expires, mailed or delivered to your last known address. Details: North Dakota homeowners non-renewal rules.

Step 4: Claims

North Dakota's unfair claims law (N.D.C.C. ch. 26.1-04) requires reasonably prompt handling without fixed day counts. You can complain to the North Dakota Insurance Department. More: North Dakota insurance claim deadlines.
