Short answer: Earthquake damage isn't covered by a standard Alaska homeowners policy; you add it by endorsement or separate policy, and the Alaska Division of Insurance publishes guidance on it. Alaska also limits non-renewals: a personal policy can be non-renewed only on its anniversary, with written notice at least 45 days before it expires. Once you file a claim, insurers must acknowledge within 10 working days and decide within 15 working days after proof of loss.
This guide is general information for Alaska homeowners. It isn't legal advice. Your policy wording controls.
Step 1: Add earthquake coverage
Standard homeowners policies exclude earth movement. The Alaska Division of Insurance's earthquake insurance page explains the options. Ask about the earthquake deductible, which is often a percentage of the dwelling limit, and whether it covers your contents and chimney.
Step 2: Flood
Flood isn't covered by homeowners insurance; see FloodSmart. If insurers won't write your home, see FAIR Plan vs. surplus lines home insurance.
Step 3: Anniversary-only non-renewal
Under AS 21.36.240, a personal policy can be non-renewed only on its anniversary, with written notice at least 45 days before it expires. Details: Alaska homeowners non-renewal rules.
Step 4: Claim deadlines
Under 3 AAC 26.070 and the Division's claims rights page, insurers must acknowledge a claim within 10 working days, accept or deny within 15 working days after a properly executed proof of loss and pay the undisputed part of a first-party claim within 30 working days after proof of loss.
