Iowa homeowners insurance guide

By Alishahi Insurance, independent broker · CA License #4348151 · Updated October 2026

Short answer: The Iowa Insurance Division reminds homeowners that flood and earthquake generally aren't covered by homeowners insurance, and points to the University of Iowa's Iowa Flood Information System to check flood scenarios. If you can't get coverage in the voluntary market, the Iowa FAIR Plan Association may provide basic property insurance. Iowa insurers must give 60 days' notice of non-renewal and generally decide first-party property claims within 30 days after proof of loss.

This guide is general information for Iowa homeowners. It isn't legal advice. Your policy wording controls.

Step 1: Check flood risk with Iowa's own tool

The Iowa Insurance Division notes that flood and earthquake are generally not covered by regular homeowners insurance, and points to the University of Iowa's Iowa Flood Center and its Iowa Flood Information System, which shows maps, alerts and flooding scenarios. Quote flood through FloodSmart.

Step 2: Home-sharing

If you rent your home through Airbnb or similar platforms, the Division warns that your homeowners policy may not cover it. Ask your agent for a home-sharing endorsement or a separate policy.

Step 3: The Iowa FAIR Plan

The Division says the Iowa FAIR Plan Association may provide basic property insurance to qualified applicants who aren't eligible in the voluntary market. A licensed Iowa agent submits the application. See FAIR Plan vs. surplus lines home insurance.

Step 4: The 60-day notice

Under Iowa Code §515.129B, insurers must give 60 days' notice for personal lines policies, which include homeowners. Details: Iowa homeowners non-renewal rules.

Step 5: Claim deadlines

Under Iowa Admin. Code r. 191-15.41 and 15.42, insurers must acknowledge a claim within 15 days, accept or deny first-party property claims within 30 days after properly executed proofs of loss (or explain why more time is needed) and pay within 30 days after accepting liability if the amount isn't in dispute.
