Oklahoma homeowners insurance guide

Short answer: Oklahoma homeowners deal with tornadoes and hail, and many companies now offer a deductible that applies only to wind or hail losses. The Oklahoma Insurance Department's Strengthen Oklahoma Homes program offers grants of up to $10,000 toward a FORTIFIED roof upgrade, paid directly to the contractor. Insurers generally must give 60 days' notice before non-renewing, acknowledge a claim within 30 days and decide within 60 days after proof of loss.

This guide is general information for Oklahoma homeowners. It isn't legal advice. Your policy wording controls.

Step 1: Know your wind and hail deductible

The Oklahoma Insurance Department's tornado and severe storm FAQs explain that most homeowners forms apply a deductible to property (Section I) losses but not to liability, and that many companies now have an optional deductible that applies only to wind or hail losses. Check the amount before storm season.

Step 2: Strengthen Oklahoma Homes

According to OKReady / Strengthen Oklahoma Homes, grants cover up to $10,000 of a roof upgrade to the FORTIFIED standard, paid directly to the contractor after the work is done and the IBHS FORTIFIED certificate is submitted. A certified evaluator checks eligibility, you pick three contractors from the program's list for bids, and you must have an award letter before work begins. You pay any cost above the grant and the evaluation fee. Ask your insurer what discount a FORTIFIED roof earns.

Step 3: Flood

Homeowners insurance doesn't cover flood; see FloodSmart. If coverage is hard to find, see FAIR Plan vs. surplus lines home insurance.

Step 4: Non-renewal notice

Under OAC 365:15, insurers generally must give 60 days' notice before cancelling or non-renewing a homeowners policy. Details: Oklahoma homeowners non-renewal rules.

Step 5: Claim deadlines

Under Oklahoma's claim settlement rules (Oklahoma Unfair Claims Settlement Practices Act), insurers must acknowledge a claim within 30 days and accept or deny within 60 days after properly executed proofs of loss. More: Oklahoma insurance claim deadlines.
